Length of the Course: 4 nights.

Have you got one of these cards? If not, you could be in violation of the law if you use a VHF Radio.

Did you receive your VHF certification prior to January 2005? You aren't legally certified to use the new DSC radios. Take the upgrade and receive your DSC certification.

The VHF Radio course provides you with the tools and techniques to use the Marine VHF Radio properly. The VHF radio is a lifeline on the water, but it isn't the same as a telaphone. Take the VHF Radio course and learn all you need to know about its importance and how to use it safely and wisely.

This course covers proper use of the VHF radio, distress, urgency, and safety communications, use of the phonetic alphabet and more. Successful completion leads to the lifetime Restricted Radiotelephone Operators Certificate from Industry Canada.

What are you "sinking about"?

What should I look for in a VHF Radio?

  • Marine radio with DSC (transmits position/time if connected to a GPS via NMEA 0183)
  • 25-watt transmit power (5w if hand-held)
  • Switch for low-power 1-watt transmit
  • All legally-allowed International-Canadian-USA channels
  • 10 weather channels
  • Visible transmission indicator
  • Readable display, adjustable backlighting
  • 1-year warranty
  • Hand-held: rechargable NiMH battery is good, but Lithium lasts longer.
  • Hand-held: Battery charger, second battery

Nice to have:

  • Special key for instant access to favorite channels
  • Dual/Tri-Watch/All-Scan modes
  • Weather alert tone detection
  • Waterproof (good) if handheld, floating (better)
